This is brand new for 2010 and is a great way for families to:

  • Enjoy the great outdoors together
  • Cycle on quiet country trails
  • Find out about wildlife and the countryside
  • Get some exercise and fresh air
  • Have fun

When you buy your family challenge pack (£5) you will receive:

  • A handy back pack
  • Challenge booklet and notepad
  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Magnifying glass
  • Compass
  • Punch card

Set off on the cycle trail (you can walk the route if you wish but it's great fun on bikes) and look out for marker posts where you will answer some questions and hunt for clues. Collect a puch mark on your card and move off to the next challenge stop. There are 12 stops in all. When you have finished, check your answers and enter our prize draw to win a mountain bike.

You can take the Challenge on any standard open day. Ask for a pack at the cycle shop.

Vaudey Abbey
In the 12th century the park at Grimsthorpe was still covered in dense woodland, and it is thought that the Earl of Albemarle granted the use of this land to the Cistercian Order of monks. They sent an abbot and 13 monks from Fountains Abbey to clear the land and build. The monks called the area Vallis Dei, meaning the valley of God, today known as The Vaudey.
