Old Apple Tree

Holiday Tree of the Week

It’s great to see masses of apple blossom on the trees and this old example of an espaliered apple tree looks sure to produce a bumper crop of juicy apples this autumn.

It is thought that the Romans started training their trees in this way to make harvesting easier. It also makes the tree look attractive too. Sometimes you will see them positioned against a wall, where the heat of the sun stored in the stonework helps protect the tree against cold snaps. This old tree seems to be doing well without one.
