Cycling & Cycle Hire

2013 Cycle Hire service

It has been possible to explore the park on our family cycle trail for over 15 years, but only if you bought your own bikes. This has now changed with the introduction of Grimsthorpe Cycle Hire.

From 11am every open day (except 5 & 6 July, 26 August) it will be possible to hire cycles and set off to explore the waymarked park trails. You will receive free helmet loan and a map to help find your way around when you hire a cycle from us.

The route has been designed with families in mind and avoids steep inclines and rough terrain wherever possible. The full trail is 15.5km (9.6 miles) long. Families with young children may wish to use Option 1 (5km/3.1 miles), or simply cycle along the tarmac road from the castle into the park and back (11.8km/7.3 miles). Two other options are 14km and 9km in length.

How do you hire cycles?

All visitors to Grimsthorpe Park must purchase admission tickets on arrival. Once parked you can make your way to the cycle hire shop where our staff will help you select the right cycles and kit you out with free loan helmets. You will also be loaned a map and shown where to start your adventure.

Payment by credit/debit card is preferred for cycle hire. (If paying by cash a valid drivers licence or car keys will be required as security). Hire prices are given in the table below.

Cycling is a great way to explore the hidden delights of the park. It's quiet, healthy, invigorating, green and fun. Pack a picnic and find a sunny spot to relax. Enjoy your expedition.

Other information you may find useful.....

The trail uses some tracks that can become uneven and muddy. In wet weather you will get muddy. During wet conditions grass areas could be slippery. Dismount and walk if cycling becomes difficult at any time. Please don't deviate from the trail or take cycles out of the park. You will be expected to be self sufficient when you are on the trail. If you experience difficulties call the hire shop on 01778 591005 and we will do our best to send help.

Tea Room
The Georgian Coach House has been converted into a comfortable licensed tearoom. In good weather patrons can also sit outside on benches. Lunches are served between 12 and 2.30pm. It's a great place to relax and enjoy some refreshments once you have completed the trail.

Afternoon tea, with homemade cakes, is still an essential part of historic house visiting and the tearoom serves these until 5.00pm to allow visitors to indulge in this tradition.... [ Read more ]
